The Graham Greene/Rev. Anthony Bischoff, S.J., collection, 1950-1984 (bulk 1974-1984).

This collection of letters and presentation editions from British novelist Graham Greene to Rev. Anthony D. Bischoff, S.J., spans their friendship of nearly forty years. The correspondence contains mostly personal greetings, but also touches on literary and political issues. The first of the nine letters in the collection was written in 1950, a year after the two met; the last was written in 1984, seven years before Greene's death. The five presentation editions given to Fr. Bischoff between 1959 and 1975, bear, in addition to Greene's signature, personal inscriptions to the recipient. Among the editions are The revenge: an autobiographical fragment, privately printed in 1963, and a specially bound edition of The return of A.J. Raffles, published in 1975. The majority of the correspondence written by Greene to Bischoff, more than thirty letters, is held in the Special Collections Dept. of Gonzaga University Library, Spokane, Washington.
